The IFP Book

Origins, Journeys and Returns:
Social Justice in Higher Education

Alumni Newsletter October 2008

Origins, Journeys and Returns: Social Justice in International Higher Education follows the International Fellowships Program from an idea to its execution and impact today. Through case studies in seven countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, the book lays out a new model for international fellowship programs by providing advanced study opportunities for leaders from marginalized and excluded communities in some of the world’s poorest countries. With inspiring examples of IFP fellows and their accomplishments, the book demonstrates that higher education can contribute directly to development and social justice. Edited by Toby Alice Volkman with Joan Dassin and Mary Zurbuchen, the book features chapters written by IFP directors, former Fellows and outside experts. The book also includes a 16-page gallery of striking color photos of IFP alumni, fellows and their work around the world. Origins, Journeys and Returns was published by the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) and is available for purchase from Columbia University Press.
