Livelihood Protection and Alternative Income Generating Project for Women
Second Article: Lessons and Challenges
Currently, stock population includes 12 big snails and 23 hatchlings. The following observation were identified as challenges to project success:
High mortality rate: the mortality rate observed within the snailery was high. This cuts across both new births and already developing snails. On further investigation, three main factors were discovered to be responsible for the high mortality.
o Broken Net & Wire Gog: the interference of snails sharp shells and corrosive liquids ...
Livelihood Protection and Alternative Income Generating Project for Women: Conceptualization, Purpose and Process
The protection of already existing sources of income is a paradigm shift from sustainable development to a more resilient oriented development. The development that goes beyond meeting present needs without jeopardizing future ones to the kind of development that strengthens itself through internal and external mechanism. In the face of global climate change and its resultant negative effects on human existence, resilient development as one of its goals seek to strengthen people...
Three PhilRice scientists were recognized by the local government of the Science City of Muñoz in Nueva Ecija for “giving pride and honor to the city and for their contribution in scientific research.”
The Institute’s executive director Dr. Eufemio T. Rasco Jr., Ms. Thelma F. Padolina, and Dr. Riza A. Ramos received plaques of recognition during the Teachers and Employees’ Night, January 9.
Ramos was recognized for receiving the 2014 UPLB Distinguished Alumna Award and Padolina for the Asian-wide Senadhira Rice Research Award given by the International Rice Research Institute.
Padolina is t...
Folate is one of the important B vitamins needed for normal cell function, growth and development. Whilst it is naturally found in rice, the level is low in the grain and the naturally-occurring forms of the vitamin are not well studied.
Chapter 2 describes the development of LC-MS/MS based technique to profile the mono- and polyglutamated folates while chapter 3 describes how folates in rice were initially profiled using the microbiological assay (MA). MA was used to screen 51 rice cultivars for their total folate content, and then LC-MS/MS was employed to measure naturally occurring mono- a...
This research examines the implementation of agricultural projects benefited from the District Development Fund (FDD), taking as if the District of Chibuto, Mozambique. Considering the characteristics of the country, the relevance of the FDD and the need to have a higher rate of payment of these projects highlights the need to study these projects, despite their increased over the years, has led to low rates compared financial resources to pay the FDD. Therefore, compromises the multiplier effect of these financial resources that should benefit more community development projects. For the ...
209 goats over 2 years old (44 males and 165 non-pregnant females) were randomly selected from five provinces in the Apurimac region of Peru: Abancay 17-31), Andahuaylas (9-36), Chincheros (7-31), Aymaraes (5-33) and Grau (6-34).
All goats were evaluated to determine the state of homogeneity or heterogeneity and to describe their morphotype according to morphological character including 14 qualitative traits, 10 quantitative traits, and 9 zoometric indexes. This information is essential to develop and propose a breed description, and subsequently a breed standard. Results indicate that the Ap...
Raising goats, in the region Apurimac from Peru, is an important source of food and income for many families. For this reason a study was conducted to characterize the genetic diversity of the local goat population. Genetic diversity was evaluated in 62 native goats from both sexes, grouped into four subpopulations: Abancay, Andahuaylas, Chincheros and Grau by means of 13 microsatellite markers. Genetic diversity of the loci was high, with an average expected heterozygosity of 0.73 and a mean number of alleles per locus of 8.23. The four subpopulations showed similar levels of genetic diversit...
Chemical pesticides have consistently demonstrated their worth by increasing global agricultural productivity, reducing insect-borne and reducing endemic diseases. Current and upcoming global conditions may lead to increase amount of used pesticides for both agriculture and public health. Since insecticides are the control agents of choice for use in agricultural and residential environments. Pyrethroid insecticides replaced other groups of insecticides; because of their selective toxicity against mammals, their rapid degradation in the environment, and the problem of resistance development. ...
